Looking for a hands-on opportunity to support cutting-edge applied research in ophthalmic imaging and medical device development? This temporary Junior Applied Research Engineer role offers the chance to work with real-world data, collaborate across technical teams, and contribute to the advancement of image processing and computer vision workflows.

Responsibilities

  • Use imaging hardware to collect data following established procedures, protocols, and study plans
  • Create, review, and maintain high-quality ground-truth datasets that support computer vision development, testing, and validation
  • Process ophthalmic image data using existing Python and/or C++ scripts, including batch processing, visualization, and result review
  • Investigate and troubleshoot data collection issues, script errors, and image quality concerns before escalating as needed
  • Review collected data to identify failure modes, quality gaps, and opportunities to improve collection or annotation workflows
  • Document experiments, maintain dataset traceability, and prepare concise updates on progress, findings, risks, and next steps
  • Support unit testing and performance evaluation of image processing and algorithmic pipelines using collected datasets
  • Collaborate with applied research, software, hardware, clinical, and other cross-functional partners as needed

Skills

  • 0-3 years of relevant experience through industry, internship, co-op, or research in imaging, computer vision, robotics, biomedical engineering, electrical engineering, computer science, or a related field
  • Familiarity with image processing or computer vision concepts such as segmentation, feature extraction, registration, detection/tracking, calibration, or quality assessment
  • Ability to run, debug, and make limited edits to existing Python and/or C++ scripts
  • Strong comfort working independently by reviewing documentation, testing ideas, and completing background research before asking for help
  • Hands-on experience collecting, organizing, and analyzing experimental or imaging data
  • Comfort working with hardware, lab setups, prototype systems, and imperfect real-world data
  • Bachelor’s or master’s degree in computer science, electrical engineering, biomedical engineering, computer engineering, robotics, mechanical engineering, or a related scientific or engineering discipline

Preferred Skills

  • Experience generating or reviewing ground-truth labels, annotations, or validation datasets
  • Proficiency in Python, with experience using OpenCV, NumPy, Pandas, SciPy, or similar libraries
  • Experience with Git, Linux/command-line tools, MATLAB, or C++
  • Exposure to medical imaging, ophthalmic imaging, or regulated medical device development
