Job Description:

  • Design, develop, and implement semantic web data pipelines to transform and integrate terminological resources.
  • Collaborates with CACS development groups and other stakeholders to lead development and implementation of data standards for clinical decision support.
  • Develops, tests, debugs, and maintains new and existing application software.
  • Works independently to define and document project requirements and provides overall technical guidance in design, architecture and implementation of software solutions.
  • Performs other related work as needed.

Critical Requirements / Knowledge / Skills

  • BS in computer science or related field with experience in Semantic Web & Ontologies.
  • 2+ years of experience with semantic web technologies such as RDF, RDFS, OWL, SPARQL
  • Familiarity with clinical/phenotypic data
  • 5+ years of experience with programming in healthcare industry, healthcare IT
  • Knowledge of biomedical ontologies and resources (e.g. SNOMED CT, LOINC, ICD, CPT, etc.).
  • Experience with using ontology tools (e.g. Protégé, TopBraid, etc.)
  • Understanding of electronic health record data processes and data flow.
  • Knowledge of biomedical common data models (e.g. FHIR, OMOP, PCORNet, etc.)
  • Experience with multiple computing languages, ideally including Java and Python.
  • Knowledge of XML, JSON-LD, and other data serialization formats
  • Strong verbal, written, and interpersonal skills

Preferred Requirements / Knowledge / Skills

  • MS in computer science or related field with a focus on Semantic Web & Ontologies.
  • Scientific background and interest - particularly biomedicine
  • Experience with semantic web libraries like Jena, OWLAPI, etc.
  • Experience with setting up and managing triple stores (e.g. Fuseki, Stardog, etc.)

Projects the candidate will be working on:

  • We are creating a scalable, multi-consumer medical ontology solution for use across.
  • This solution will enable rapid development of CDS (clinical decision support) and other provider-oriented applications, as well as other applications that make use of medical ontologies.

Ideal Background:

  • Semantic web experience and expertise is required.
  • a. This requirement narrows the candidate pool down by 95% or more – it is a rare and specific skillset.
  • b. Most of the people I’ve seen with this skillset have postgraduate degrees, fellowships, participate in or lead standards committees, etc. – none of that is required, but may indicate a higher-quality candidate compared to those without any of those extracurriculars.

Experience:

  • Experience developing scalable applications.
  • Knowledge of technical and application architecture patterns.
  • Real-world experience architecting and designing applications involving semantic web, ideally involving medical ontology.
  • Real-world experience working with an ontology solution, e.g. Ontoserver.

  • Around 8 team members. 1 product owner, 5 developers, 1 expert terminologist, + this position (developer and semantic web expert)
