When we talk about the contingent workforce, conversations often veer toward tools, tech and process. But as I’ve learned, what really drives program success is clarity and the ability to simplify the complex.

In this episode of Launch Point, I sat down with Mickey Pelletier, a seasoned leader in contingent workforce strategy who has worked with companies like Meta, Zillow, SAP and Accenture. Now at the helm of his own consultancy, CWM Strategies, Mickey is on a mission to make CW programs more approachable, more authentic and above all, more effective.

We unpacked everything from simplifying industry jargon to the power (and limitations) of AI, and why humor and humanity might just be the secret sauce in today’s CW landscape.

Simplifying the CW space

A theme that kept coming up in our conversation was simplification. Mickey and I share a belief that too often, the CW industry leans into jargon, acronyms and unnecessary complexity.

“What’s the problem we’re trying to solve?” Mickey asked. “It really is that simple. Everything else should serve that answer, whether it’s how you classify talent or how you structure billing.”

Mickey breaks down this complexity through a mix of practicality and creativity. One of his more unexpected tools? Memes.

Yes, memes.

“I use them to make CW concepts more digestible. If I can tie a CW pain point to a cultural reference, clients get it faster and they remember it.”

It’s a reminder that even in a technical space, humor and authenticity go a long way.

AI, authenticity and the need to stand out

As we talked about the tools shaping the future of workforce programs, Mickey didn’t shy away from the topic dominating nearly every industry conversation: AI.

He acknowledged its value, especially in quickly generating content, screening resumes and job matching, but emphasized the need for authenticity.

“In a market with 20 or 30 thousand staffing suppliers, everyone’s saying the same thing. If your voice doesn’t feel real, people tune it out.”

Mickey sees a risk in over-relying on AI without tailoring it. “AI can write a 1,000-word piece in seconds. But if it doesn’t sound like you or reflect your values, it’s not doing its job.”

That message resonated. At Horizontal, we’ve been thinking a lot about how to balance innovation with human connection, and Mickey’s insight reinforced that AI should be a tool, not a substitute.

What’s next for CW programs?

We closed our conversation looking ahead. Mickey sees major shifts coming, and not just in technology.

“Companies need to start prioritizing their CW functions. In some cases, nearly half the workforce isn’t made up of employees, it’s contingent talent. You can’t manage that with a side-of-desk approach anymore.”

We talked about the growing importance of skills-based hiring, where job titles take a back seat to competencies. It’s a trend we’re seeing across clients, and one that AI could help accelerate, if applied with intention.

Mickey is also keeping a close eye on the downstream impact of AI, particularly in services procurement and program management. There’s potential for automation to revolutionize those spaces, but it raises big questions around job displacement and workforce planning.

Staying human in a tech-driven industry

What stood out most in our conversation was Mickey’s unwavering commitment to keeping the CW space real, relevant and human.

There’s no doubt the industry is changing, and fast. But Mickey reminded me that amidst all the innovation, the best leaders still start by asking:

  • What’s the problem?
  • Who are we solving it for?
  • How can we make it easier for them to succeed?

Whether it’s through consulting, content or a well-timed meme, Mickey is answering those questions in ways that challenge the status quo, and I can’t wait to see what he does next.

I had a great conversation with Mickey, and if you’d like to hear more of his insights, I’d highly recommend listening to the full Launch Point podcast episode.
