AI, ESG, return to office, labor market changes … throughout December 2023 and the start of 2024, there have been a lot of predictions for the new year.

Now that we’re a month into 2024, here are our thoughts on emerging trends and what’s important for hiring managers to note this year:

1. Challenges navigating return to office

The ongoing struggle between companies and employees regarding return to office mandates are unlikely to conclude soon. Our recommendation is to acknowledge that a universal solution is impractical. Foster flexibility among your employees and communicate expectations with clarity.

2. Customer demand for transparent DEI & ESG plans

Forward thinking companies will increasingly prioritize diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) efforts, as well as environmental, social and governance (ESG) plans, as they understand the pivotal role these play in attracting top talent and fortifying market positioning. This is a critical aspect that cannot be sidelined; for those yet to heavily invest in DEI and ESG, 2024 is the year to do so.

3. Accelerated adoption of AI and automation

We anticipate a significantly accelerated adoption of artificial intelligence (AI) and automation technologies in 2024. These tools play a large role in optimizing workflows, streamlining recruitment processes and delivering better outcomes for both clients in candidates. If 2023 was the year of experimentation with AI, 2024 it will be the year of purposeful AI and automation execution for innovative companies.

4. Rapid growth of SOW offerings for complex projects

The demand for Statement of Work (SOW) offerings is set to experience rapid growth in 2024. Companies are embracing SOW arrangements to enhance agility and efficiency and secure the right talent and fit. This approach also ensures that suppliers have a more vested interest in the successful outcomes of projects. We recommend that buyers consider this option as opposed to traditional staffing when faced with a complex project.

5. Expansion of global talent solutions

While overseas/offshore talent may have experienced a downturn in 2023, the decline was consistent with overall staffing trends around the world. In 2024, we believe that companies will look to be creative in how they attract talent and complete projects. Globalization aligns with the acceptance of remote work, potential cost savings and provides a more diverse range of skills without geographical constraints.
